ESXi 5.1 can be upgraded to ESXi 5.1.0a via Update Manager by applying the ESXi510-201210401-BG patch.
Attached the host patch baselines if it is not already attached.
Scanned for available patches and the ESXi510-201210401-BG patch will be highlighted as missing.
Now that the missing patch has been detected, the host can be remediated. The remediation will require the host to go into maintenance mode and restarted to complete the process. This is where vMotion really come in handy.
After the remediation, the build will be ESXi 5.1.0 838463.
