The same issue never failed to repeat itself. Again, someone installing Citrix XenApp 5.0 got into some hanging problem and RDP refused to work after the reboot. The only difference was this time it happened on a Windows Server 2003 R2 machine.
A quick check on the Windows System event log shows the error “Cannot load illegal module: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctxrdpwsx.DLL.”.
Apparently, ctxrdpwsx.DLL does not exist in C:\WINDOWS\system32.
The fix is to go to the registry and search for all instances of ctxrdpwsx and replace them with rdpwsx. Reboot the machine and RDP is up and running.
