Last week I have received two Symantec Backup Exec V-Ray Edition licences which also comes with one year of maintenance support. Thanks to Matt Stephenson for informing me about the deal. Also thanks to Iesa Behbehani for the help in getting the licences.
If you are a VMware vExpert, VMware Certified Professional or VMware Certified Instructor, you can get the free licences by submitting the request at http://bit.ly/BE_vExpert.
If you are a MVP, you can get the free licences by submitting the request at http://bit.ly/BE_MVP.
Symantec Backup Exec V-Ray Edition is not a new product but rather a new licensing model. Symantec Backup Exec V-Ray Edition is licensed based on per processor socket. Each Symantec Backup Exec V-Ray Edition licence includes:
- One Backup Exec 2012 media server licence
- Agent for Applications and Databases to protect an unlimted of virtual machines
- Agent for VMware and Hyper-V
- Deduplication Option
Apparently Symantec Backup Exec V-Ray Edition has a “Tier A” licence for processor with 6 cores or less and a “Tier B” licence for processor 8 cores or more. The free licence falls under “Tier A” licence.
If you want to find out more about Symantec Backup Exec V-Ray Edition, I would recommend the following video by Matt Stephenson and Scott Baker. Towards the end of the video, there is discussion of some licensing scenarios which is helpful.
Looks like Symantec Backup Exec V-Ray Edition licensing model will benefit highly virtualized environment in term of cost and licence management.
